The Barassi Cup (Coppa Ottorino Barassi) was an Anglo-Italian amateur football competition played from 1968 to 1976.

How it worked

  • The English winners of the FA Amateur Cup played the winners of Italy’s amateur cup (the Coppa Italia Dilettanti).
  • It was played over two legs, one at each club’s ground, and the winner was decided on aggregate.
  • It was named after Ottorino Barassi, an important Italian football administrator who also held a senior role at FIFA.

Some history

  • Leytonstone were the first winners in 1968.
  • In 1969 the cup was shared between North Shields and the Italian side Almas Roma after the two legs couldn’t separate them.
  • Hendon won it in 1972, beating Unione Valdinievole 3-1 on aggregate. Hendon had won the Amateur Cup that April.
  • The FA Amateur Cup was abolished in 1974, so the English side in the final two years was the champion of the Isthmian League Second Division instead.
  • The last edition was in 1976, when the Italian side Soresinese won on penalties. It was the only time an Italian team won it outright.

This is a rare 4 page issue which is an unusual square shape and is rarely seen for the 1st League of the European Amateur Cup which was played at Hendon on the 23rd September 1972 against Unione. .  An interesting set to collect.
